This Level 3 Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship is designed for those looking to build a skilled career as a light vehicle technician. Working with cars and vans, you’ll train in a variety of settings, from manufacturer dealerships to independent garages, gaining the expertise employers demand.

You'll learn how to:

  • Carry out fundamental tasks associated with removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle.
  • Obtain diagnostic and repair information.
  • Interpret diagnostic information and use electrical wiring diagrams to determine system serviceability.
  • Use a range of diagnostic equipment.
  • Follow recognised diagnostic procedures, logical diagnostic sequence and apply advanced diagnostic principles and problem-solving techniques to establish faults.
  • Report faults using company procedures and recommend suitable further actions.
  • Follow recognised repair procedures to complete a wide range of repairs including those which involve complex procedures, or in depth knowledge.
  • Test the function of repaired and fitted components.

Entry requirements

Apprentices aged 16 to 18 at the start of their training are required to achieve English and maths qualifications to complete their apprenticeship, if they do not already hold suitable equivalent qualifications grade. Apprentices who do not already hold a suitable equivalent qualification in either English or maths or both subjects are funded to achieve up to an approved level 2 qualification in these subjects.

Apprentices aged 19+ at the start of their training can also be funded to study up to an approved level 2 qualification in English or maths or both, if they do not already hold suitable equivalent qualifications and their employer agrees that this should be part of their training plan

Programme includes

A motor vehicle service and maintenance technician apprentice services and repairs light vehicles such as cars and vans and works either in dealerships which focus on a particular manufacturer, or in an independent garage which deals with many different makes of vehicles.

This occupation can lead to you working in:

  • Main dealer and manufacturer-aligned garages – servicing and repairing vehicles to brand standards
  • Independent garages and workshops – carrying out diagnostics, maintenance, and repair across multiple makes and models
  • Fleet operators and logistics companies – maintaining light commercial vehicles and vans
  • Specialist repair centres – focusing on electrics, hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs), or advanced diagnostics
  • Fast-fit centres – performing servicing, MOT preparation, tyres, brakes, and quick repairs.
