T Level Media Students Film Local Band

T Level Media students at Loughborough College were given a unique behind-the-scenes opportunity to capture the exciting moment when local band The Mercians visited the College to perform.

Working as a professional production team, the group of first-years used industry-standard cameras to film the live event from multiple angles. Using top-of-the-range equipment typically reserved for second-year students, they documented the band’s set-up, filmed behind-the-scenes footage and even directed the band through some ‘to-camera’ introductions.

The students are now hard at work in post-production, editing their footage to produce a suite of content covering the entire event for social media and online use.

Preparation for the event began days earlier with a full production meeting. Roles were assigned, equipment reviewed, and plans put in place to ensure everything ran smoothly. On the day, the team arrived early to set up at the venue and stayed until the end of the performance, returning later to enjoy the afternoon show as members of the audience.

Tom Chambers, Course Leader for Media, praised the students’ professionalism and enthusiasm, sharing: “It was amazing to see our T Level Media students take on the responsibility of filming a live event - they did themselves proud. Each member of the team acted professionally, captured incredible footage and are in the process of editing to ensure the final products meet professional standards. This is an experience they will remember for a long time to come.”

For student and long-time fan of The Mercians, Joe Newman, the experience was especially memorable. Joe not only filmed his favourite band but also met them in person, and secured backstage passes for an upcoming gig in Nottingham – all while carrying out his role as part of the media crew.

Joe said: “Meeting The Mercians was an experience I will never forget. It was a privilege to be included in the media team for this event capturing the best day of my life through a lens.”

The opportunity highlights how T Level Media students are given the chance to blend classroom learning with real-world industry experience, allowing them to learn the hands-on skills that prepare them for careers in the creative industries.
